Do You Have a Routine for Writing?

I don’t follow a structured setting but I make sure I write at least five days a week, and it could be from 2,000-10,000 words a day. It depends on how inspired I am. There are times that I can write 10,000 words a day and on other days, I write 2,000 words. I don’t follow a schedule but I’m most alert in the evenings when my family is asleep.

  1. I tried setting a routine but I failed. But what I realized was when I have an idea, there is no stopping. I get obsessed by it. And when I am discouraged, it is near impossible to get me to the writing pad. However, since that attitude got me very long breaks, I made a conscious effort to write almost every day - my blog. That keeps me in touch whether I write fiction or not!

  2. @Shilpa, routines and schedules feel like a chore to me which is why I prefer flexibility. Just like you, I make it a point to write daily. When I take a break from writing my novels, I either do research, prepare my summary or read. Thanks for sharing!

  3. My best ideas come to me before I sleep, which sucks because I either have to get up and make a note, or hope I remember in the AM. I write action/adventure coz I'm an action/adventure sort of guy. Which means, I don't like to sit around and write. For me, the best time to write is after 8pm when the rest of the family is watching television.

  4. @Dan, that always happens to me. My mind never seems to shut off which is why I keep a notebook beside me. If I don't write it down, I will forget about it the next day. I also write at night when everyone is sleeping--no distraction. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend!

  5. I'm a bit like you - I try to write every day but accept that there are some days when it flies and other days when it's like trudging through treacle. I make the most of the good days now and don't worry about the bad ones - I know I can't change them!

  6. @Amanda, you're right. There are some days when I just can't stop writing, and there are days when I'm stuck and can't seem to write a word. I like what you said about making the most of the good days and not worrying about the bad ones. It avoids the guilt. :-) Thanks for stopping by and sharing.
